What Measures Should Bars And Restaurants Have Adopted For Re-opening?

What Measures Should Bars And Restaurants Have Adopted For Re-opening?

For those of us that haven’t yet ventured back into a bar or restaurant, you can expect to see a few changes the next time you’re tempted by a cold beer or delicious meal that you haven’t had to prepare yourself.

In order to allow hospitality spaces to reopen, government guidelines have required that our favourite haunts operate quite differently than we may be used to due to coronavirus. Here are a few of the measures that are either a legal requirement or have been recommended in order for hospitality premises to reopen to the public safely.

Collection of contact details

A legal requirement, all drinkers and diners must provide contact details to the venue when taking up a table.

This is so that the Government can effectively track and trace any members of the public that have been in close proximity to someone who has later tested positive for coronavirus. This system means that those at risk of contracting the virus can self-isolate to avoid further spread.

Table service

All pubs, bars and restaurants are now asking visitors to book a table before arriving. Ruling out walk ins will cut down on queues and stop hordes of visitors flocking to the venue at the same time. This allows for social distancing both in front of house and back of house.

Table service is also now on offer in most venues instead of ordering at the bar to cut down the risk of infection and allow for social distancing. Bars, cafes and restaurants around the country have adapted to this necessary evil by creating apps to communicate orders to bar and kitchen staff.

Facemasks

Although not a legal requirement, many business owners in the hospitality sector are equipping their waiting staff with facemasks to stop droplets and airborne particles coming into contact with other people.

Although this is an additional expense for the business owner, it is worth it to protect both staff and customers. For cost effectiveness and efficiency, washable antibacterial facemasks are a smart choice.

One metre plus rule

At the same time that the decision was made to allow bars and restaurants to reopen, the two-metre distance rule was relaxed to one metre plus. You should still expect to see markers on the floors as a visual reminder to keep a safe distance away from other patrons.

Hand sanitiser stations

All venues must provide handwashing facilities for visitors, so you’ll be met with hand sanitisers aplenty when you venture out for a meal or drinks – similar to what is in place in many shops such as supermarkets.

Many establishments have installed hand sanitiser stations at entrances that they insist you use before heading inside. There should also be provide plenty of additional stations for staff members to use behind the bar and in the kitchen.

Alfresco dining

To ensure social distancing regulations are followed, many businesses are being encouraged to make the use of any outdoor space available to them and opt for alfresco seating where possible. Some venues have taken things a stage further and added Perspex screens between tables, by the bar and at reception areas to help safeguard both staff and customers.
